Reviews
Time was when the noisiest thing happening south of
the river on a Monday night was the bellringers’
practise at the parish church. But all that’s
changed since Abandon, the Jug and Jester’s
celebrated weekly live music event, began.
Sextet Jaffa Rose really steal the show with their
surprisingly brief set of the sort of inspired, laid-back
jazz that has you reaching for the Gauloises and planning
who you’re going to tell about them first. They
truly startle the ear with their ability to meld each
member’s individual output into some cohesive
and deeply cool tunes. With evocative lyrics penned
by saxophonist Nick Dugdale, Figure in the Alley –
a shivering, doleful track with deceptively jangly
undertones – was the night’s standout
track, followed by Jaffa Funk. This latter, if nothing
else, is a sterling opportunity to see a man play
two saxophones at once.
